New Line's Salem's Lot adaptation's release date has been moved from September 2022 to April 2023. The Hollywood Reporter shared that while the movie was meant to come out September 9th, the new release date is April 21. Stephen King's fans will have to wait until the spring to watch the adaptation of one of his most well-known works.
Salem's Lot is the latest of Stephen King's best novels to be turned into a movie. In 1974, King's first book, Carrie, was published, and in 1975, his second book, Salem's Lot, came out. The story follows a writer named Ben Mears who comes back to his Maine small town and meets Kurt Barlow, who is a vampire. King's work has explored some of the most terrifying things that can happen to anyone, from a teenage girl with psychic powers being bullied to a group of kids meeting Pennywise the clown, who forces kids into sewers and kills them. Salem's Lot examines vampires who live among humans.
There have been two Salem's Lot miniseries, the first from 1979 and the second in 2004. Gary Dauberman is the director of the current adaptation. Dauberman is known for directing the 2018 film Annabelle Come Home and his writing credits include Annabelle (2014), Annabelle: Creation (2017), It (2017), The Nun (2018), and It Chapter Two (2019). Rob Lowe played the protagonist Ben in the 2004 miniseries, and Rutger Hauer played Barlow, with Donald Sutherland in the role of Richard Straker.
According to Cinemablend.com, Dauberman spoke at CinemaCon in April 2022 and shared that he thinks that Stephen King's books are "grounded" and that the characters feel "real." The film stars Lewis Pullman as the main character Ben, and Alfre Woodard, William Sadler, Pilou Asbæk, and Spencer Treat Clark round out the cast. Pullman is best known for playing Rhett Abbott in Outer Range and he recently played Lt. Robert 'Bob' Floyd in Top Gun: Maverick which has grossed over $1 billion.
A remake of Stephen King's book Firestarter was released in May 2022 starring Zac Efron and Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a father and daughter dealing with the daughter's extraordinary powers. So far, the film has grossed $14,889,250 worldwide. It Chapter Two was a huge financial success, grossing $473,122,525 worldwide.
