Sheynnis Palacios, a devoted One Piece fan from Nicaragua, claimed the coveted title of 2023 Miss Universe in a stunning event held in San Salvador, El Salvador. The first runner-up position was secured by Anntonia Porsild of Thailand. Competing against representatives from 84 countries, the pageant was judged by a distinguished panel, including model Halima Aden, Carson Kressley from "Queer Eye," TikTok influencer Avani Gregg, and former Miss Universe winners Janelle Commissiong from Trinidad & Tobago (Miss Universe 1977) and Iris Mittenaere from France (Miss Universe 2016).
The evening commenced with the announcement of the top twenty semi-finalists after a rigorous preliminary round and a worldwide fan vote. As the competition progressed, the field narrowed down to ten after the swimsuit round, which unfortunately saw the elimination of Miss Nepal, the first "curvy" contestant in the pageant's semi-finals, and Miss Pakistan, who chose a burkini as her swimsuit attire. The evening gown segment further reduced the contestants by half. The subsequent two rounds of thought-provoking Q&A sessions led to the final three contenders: Palacios, Porsild, and second runner-up Moraya Wilson from Australia. In the final round, Palacios was asked about a historical figure she'd spend a day with, and she chose the 18th-century British philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. She highlighted Wollstonecraft's boundary-breaking achievements, emphasizing how she provided opportunities for countless women. Through a translator, she passionately stated, "There are no limitations for women today." Completing the top five were Miss Colombia, Camila Avella, and Miss Puerto Rico, Karla Guilfú, while Spain's Athenea Pérez from the top 10 was crowned Miss Congeniality. Palacios follows in the footsteps of the 2022 Miss Universe, R’Bonney Gabriel from the USA.
